I don't see the big deal in this.

Beginning March 31st, people will no longer be able to verify their identity to the SSA over the phone and those who cannot properly verify their identity over the agency’s “my Social Security” online service, will be required to visit an agency field office in person to complete the verification process, agency leadership told reporters Tuesday.

It clicks in if you want to change your Direct Deposit bank or switch to Direct
Express from the bank or vice versa. You have to go to a SS office. Also many are closed now and the ones open are packed with short staffs due to Musk. And it won't get better...........

Your right but this is what I saw.

In addition to the identity verification change, the agency announced that it plans to expedite processing of recipients’ direct deposit change requests – both in person and online – to one business day. Previously, online direct deposit changes were held for 30 days

With the SS website you have an option to sign in with "ID Me". When I set up my ID Me account, I had a brief 5-minute web call with someone who verified my identity.

Why did you choose ID.me over Login.gov?

I heard this only affects new benefits applicants, or existing recipients wanting to change their method of receiving benefits (also mentioned in post 3)

I'm not from the US but since for years, we do all this stuff including identification, new or existing customers, online. You can call the govt agency but unless you really want to ID yourself on the phone, you have to do that prior to calling and then call via the govt agency app.

This is not good news. But there has not been any good news for SS and Medicare since January........

If they manage to do this in embassy's or consulates abroad, i don't see this as such a big problem.

What are the new Social Security ID policies?
The new SSA ID policy includes a transition to requiring “stronger” identity proofing procedures for both benefit claims and direct deposit changes—identity proofing that can no longer happen over the phone for most beneficiaries of Social Security.
Recipients will instead have to verify their identity via an online account, but those who do not have an account will need to prove their identity “in-person” at an SSA field office. People can call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an in-person appointment.
Per the SSA, “the updated measures will further safeguard Social Security records and benefits for millions of Americans against fraudulent activity.”
