Senator Antonio Marte is the top dog for the transportation sindicate in the country. Here's what he has to say about his drivers:

Senator Antonio Marte of Santiago Rodríguez province warned that if drug tests were unexpectedly administered to public transportation drivers in the Dominican Republic, the routes would be left without drivers.

During his address to the Senate General Committee, where Milton Morrison, director of the National Institute of Land Transit and Transportation (INTRANT), appeared, the legislator asserted that the situation is alarming and widespread in the transportation sector.

"We have to do the drug tests unexpectedly on every bus route and at every stop. And if we do them in the National District, nobody will be bothered. Listen carefully, nobody will be bothered," Marte said. The senator quoted a well-known transportation leader who confessed: "I don't do drug tests because all the routes will be left without a driver."

Marte insisted that the problem is serious and affects the majority of public transport drivers. He affirmed that these are not mere rumors, but a reality that he himself, as a leader in the sector, recognizes.

The legislator's statement exposes a worrying allegation about the possible use of prohibited substances by drivers on public transport, which poses serious risks to road safety in the country.

So now they finally have a solution on how to get those carritos out of the street, now they just have to replace those cars with something more suitable for public transportation...

As always I’m lost. What drugs would be considered a no go for drivers to take. I know coke, heroin, ketamine and weed are no goes. But what about pharmaceutical? Benzodiazepine, pain management medication. Steroids? I really didn’t think most drivers were crack heads. Just thought they were hammered all the time. personally I would rather buy 2 Jumbos than a gram of coke with the 400 pesos.

This asks the question are some drivers doping to get them through the stress and long hours on the roads?

The government has to put an honest effort crack down on drugs and traffic chaos. Past history indicates it won't happen.

If I may play devil's advocate? Having sat in the front seat of a guagua on numerous occasions. "Ya gotta be on drugs" to want to drive one all day!
