Here is a quick interview (in Spanish) of an instructor of golf in Villa Isabel (Santo Domingo). These young Dominicans never were into golf and are getting lessons on how to play the sport as a way to show the sport has potential in the local population, not just tourists. The instructor says that prior to teaching them he doubted they would be very receptivo to the sport since it isn’t very popular in their circles, but was greatly surprised with how much they are insterested in golf.
Is this a sign that golf can be a growing sport among the local population?
These kids will be future golfers and will take that interest with them wherever they go, either in the DR or move to another country. That’s one interest they probably would never had if there was no effort in spreading interest in the sport beyond the very privileged parts of society.
