The highly respected civil society group, Centro Juan XXIII in a note to the country calls for transparency and the highest standards in the selection of the five members of the Chamber of Accounts, the entity called upon to audit government. For decades the entity has been plagued by complacency with the government in power. The past board was mired by strong differences between the members that disrupted the work of the institution.

The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party is majority in both houses of Congress, the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, and thus gets to decide who the members will be. I often wonder how many of our fellow DR1 members understand just how important the Chamber Of Accounts is to this country's future given the lack of comments or interest whenever this topic is in the news.

These are the people who are being tasked with policing the politicians.

It might be important CR, but I sure don't see anything of value they do.

They are tasked with conducting audits on public servants/ politicians. Investigating their quarterly/ yearly financial filings to make sure they are claiming their wealth and to, if need be, investigate exactly where their wealth is coming from and whether or not said funds are legal, legit, illegal or illicit. They are also responsible for referring any suspected cases of fraud, corruption, theft ect. to the prosecutors office for further review.

Considering the history of corruption in this country, I'd say if the Chamber Of Accounts has an honest group of dedicated people running it, the amount of value they bring to the table is priceless.

I'm often amazed by how long some people live down here and how much they complain about the corruption when in reality they don't seem to have much understanding of how things work.
