President Luis Abinader addressed the nation on Sunday, 6 April 2025 to announce 15 actions the country is taking to reinforce border control and check migration with Haiti. “We will not allow the spill off of violence in Haiti to the Dominican Republic,” said Abinader when addressing the country.

The address was unusual because the President regularly speaks to the nation on Mondays, during his weekly press conference. The announcements came after Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez described Haiti as the country’s main problem and the border with Haiti as a “revolving door,” referring to the ease with which persons deported return promptly to the country. What the government says it is going to do vs what actions it actually does usually are at opposite ends of the same pole. It is a given, there is a lot of media attention now and gov't has to play its part to fill their bulletins. Meanwhile, it can be assumed the large and influential businesses of the east are silently begging for the country's leadership ease up on measures aimed at the migrants working the construction and hospitality sectors. It is a matter of when the gov't goes along with them. Yet, there will still be images of authorities, roundups, and inflated deportation numbers to satisfy the public.

bob saunders has the correct idea for a foreign workers program.

100% aGREED.

According to Domimican Today the National Migration Council has not met in over two and a half years. The CNM (National Migration Council) established in 2004 by General Migration Law No. 285-04, is tasked with designing national migration policies and coordinating the actions of various institutions involved in immigration management.

Luis laid out some wonderful ideas however if the current laws were being enforced as written, none of this would be necessary. In other words...
The DR can not litigate it's way out of the problem.
