You can see the "barnee"(barniz tinte) in the top foto above. You are correct - most paint folks refer to it as "barnee". They are not talking about pure stain.

Here's a pic of my caoba (mahogany) stained front door. This was tinted first and then a clear varnish painted on top for protection. Tinted varnishes look nice, but using a pure tint will bring out more details in the grain and you can make it as light or as dark as you want. Notice how different panels and sections within the panel tend to absorb more tint than others,:
